Biography
As HG Nelson and Rampaging Roy Slaven, Greig Pickhaver and John Doyle are heard on Sydney’s JJJ every Sunday afternoon in their popular programme This Sporting Life which has been searing itself into the nation’s consciousness since 1986. Roy and HG are now inextricably linked with the sporting achievements of this country through their broadcasts of the VFL, AFL and Rugby League Grand Finals, known to sports lovers as The Festival of the Boot.
HG was often asked to comment on matters of local and global importance by Andrew Ollie on his morning programme and his insights into the world of Sport are keenly sought.
HG and Roy’s first book Pants Off is an indispensable part of any sportsman’s library, as are the cassettes Roy - The Life and Times of Roy Slaven and It's a Doodle written and performed by HG. Wicket-To-Wicket their seminal guide to cricket has also been released on cassette. There are now three volumes of the South Coast News books, the latest being Five South Coast Seasons.
Both Roy and HG are popular after dinner speakers and have gone to Wimbledon on two separate occasions to bring their own unique view of the great event to their broadcasts on the ABC. On their home turf they have appeared at the Perth Art Directors Club Award dinner, the Modern Motor Magazine Best Car Award luncheon and the Sydney Festival Country Music Concert In The Park.
HG and Roy have appeared on The Midday Show with Ray Martin, Business Today, the Today Programme, the Sunday Programme, Andrew Denton’s Blah, Blah, Blah, The 7:30 Report and Tonight Live. Two series of their television program This Sporting Life have been screened nationally on ABC TV. In 1997 Roy & H.G. recorded the last three episodes of their Saturday night show Club Buggery from Norwich, England.
During 1998 Roy & H.G. were kept busy with their live TV show The Channel Nine Show on the ABC, live radio on Sunday afternoon on JJJ, regular pieces for Ben Elton’s new show on the BBC, and Planet Norwich which aired in both the UK and Australia.
They hosted the hugely successful Olympic broadcasts “The Dream”, the Winter Olympics "The Ice Dream" and their hit show The Monday Dump for Channel 7.
HG has written, produced and presented several documentaries and documentary dramas including Changi and Two Men in a Tinnie.
In 2010 Roy and HG were both awarded an Order of Australia, recognizing their outstanding contribution to media and charitable organisations.
