1. In addition to economic risk, what else should businesses be thinking about in terms of geopolitical impacts? 

Geopolitical impacts have implications in unexpected areas like reputation risk, PR and media, HR/relationships between the business and its employees as well as cybersecurity threats.

Limiting these impacts begins by accepting that those who have best prepared in advance for the rainy day are the ones least likely to get wet! 

 

2. How do you tailor your expertise or insights to different kinds of industries or events? 

I focus on setting out the fundamental principles and patterns that are most relevant and of practical use for businesses as a starting point for change and action.

But I also have decades of experience across diverse sectors of the global economy – from banking and investment to insurance, aviation, logistics and hospitality. I’ve also interviewed CEOs across all sectors, allowing me to tailor keynotes and advisory work to the needs of specific sectors and individual businesses.

3. Are your audiences often surprised about how geopolitics can impact their businesses? 

They are! Often!

Too many businesses simply are not (beyond their basic legal/regulatory obligations) traditionally structured or led to consider such risks. They typically have no expertise in geopolitics and believe that these risks are random and there is nothing they can do to affect their impacts on the business.

I challenge this, in practical, real-world terms, helping them appreciate when and how they can better understand and mitigate the impacts of geopolitical risks.

 

4. How do you ensure audiences come away with the right balance of alarm about geopolitical forces with reassurance and optimism about how risks can be managed? 

It’s an important question, and key to my work. I have no interest in giving false comfort, but neither am I interested in causing unnecessary alarm.

The key is helping business decision-makers and leaders understand how they can adapt their systems and structures to ensure that they are ready to better track and assess these risks.

This adaptation often involves no cost or significant resource allocation – it is instead about adjustments in structure and process that help prepare for and mitigate their negative impacts. It can even help businesses identify opportunities for benefit and profit that otherwise might not be identified.
