Alan Kohler

One of Australia's most respected journalists for over 52 years

Alan Kohler has been a financial journalist for 52 years, starting as a cadet on The Australian in 1970. He became Chanticleer columnist for the Australian Financial Review in 1979 and was appointed editor of that newspaper in 1985. He returned to writing the Chanticleer column in 1988 and after a brief period as strategist for stockbroker, James Capel Australia, he was appointed editor of The Age in 1992.

In 1995 he joined the ABC’s 7.30 Report as its economics and business correspondent, while also writing commentary and features for Fairfax newspapers, The Age, the Sydney Morning Herald and the Financial Review. In 2002 he moved from the 7.30 Report to presenting finance on ABC News.

In 2005 Alan Kohler created Eureka Report, a subscription newsletter for investors, and in 2007 added Business Spectator, a free online financial publication. These were sold to News Corporation in 2012 and Alan began writing columns for The Australian, as well as continuing to contribute finance reports to ABC News.

In 2016 Alan launched a new subscription newsletter for investors, called The Constant Investor, which was sold in 2018 to Investsmart Group, which had bought Eureka Report from News Corp.

Alan is now editor in chief of Eureka Report, finance presenter on ABC News and columnist for The New Daily.
