Bill Nelson
Biography
Bill Nelson is an elite international sporting coach who has turned his knowledge of developing peak team and individual performance into a world-class corporate consultancy, Total Performance Concepts Pty Ltd.
Businesses, defence forces, educational institutions, local government, and elite sporting programs throughout the world rely on Bill’s wisdom of the science of performance improvement through leadership, team building and the development of organisational culture.
Bill’s unique approach enables him to help people get the absolute best out of themselves and those around them. Their results bear testament to this. In providing his services, he draws on his expertise and time as a multi-award winning swimming coach who has worked with the sport’s foremost performers in such academies as the world-acclaimed Australian Institute of Sport.
During a distinguished career, Bill personally coached Daniel Kowalski, Mathew Dunn, Scott Miller, Michael Klim, Nicole Stevenson, Linley Frame and Duncan Armstrong. He was the national event coach for distance swimming for the Australian swimming team, a program that included swimmers such as Ian Thorpe, Kieren Perkins and Grant Hackett. The success of the athletes he coached took Bill to the Commonwealth Games, World Championships and the Olympics Games, and elevated him to Vice-Presidency of the World Swim Coaches Association.
Bill’s ability to isolate the building blocks of peak performance was recognised by other sporting entities. From 1992-94, Bill served as an advisor to the Australian Road Cycling Team and from the mid-90s to 2001, he was a consultant to the premiership-winning SE Melbourne Magic and the Victoria Titans National Basketball League teams.
He has provided team-building and performance-enhancement services to the Australian Football League, Rugby League and Rugby Union clubs and teams. Bill also served as a teamwork, leadership, culture and personal performance consultant to the National Rugby League (NRL) Referees and Match Officials from 2004-2010.
As a member of the coaching and management team, Bill helped to steer the Sydney Kings Basketball team to the National Basketball League (NBL) crown in the 2003, 2004, 2005 seasons, as well as Grand Final appearances in the 2006 and 2008 seasons. He was also a consultant to Basketball Australia and the Men’s National Team in preparation for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
In the 2008-09 season, Bill continued his work in the NBL by working with Coach Brian Goorjian and the Victoria-based South Dragons as they worked their way from finishing last in the NBL in 2007-08 to the National Champions in the 2008-09 season (which was Bill’s 14th season mentoring Coach Goorjian).
In 2010 and 2011, Bill worked with Coach Rick Stone and the Newcastle Knights NRL club to develop and instigate a level of performance focus based around four pillars of team culture. His work was soon noticed by the Nathan Tinkler backed Hunter Sports Group and in 2012 Bill began consulting to both The Newcastle Knights NRL and the Newcastle Jets A-League sides.
After providing his insight and experience exclusively to Olympic or elite level athletes for many years, Bill expanded his scope and now coaches a wide variety of leading business organisations and personnel. Major corporate brands including Canon, Panasonic and Ansett Airlines have called on Bill to assist them with national and international advertising and marketing campaigns.
Bill also serves as a performance strategist to international surfwear and board sports company Billabong. In this role he guides the competitive fortunes of many leading professional surfers, snowboarders and skateboarders on both the national and international men's and women’s tours.
Sharing his expertise in a number of media roles, Bill held a weekly spot on ABC Radio for 7 years, conducted sports reporting for the Triple M radio network and currently hosts a US-based radio show Success Sessions for the Matrix Media Group. His social media commitments include producing subscription based video podcasts, blogs and the very popular The Full Nelson monthly newsletter.
Bill has had numerous articles published and interviews broadcast in a wide array of global outlets, publications, newsletters and online websites. His book Gold Teamwork continues to be used by organisations around the world as a simple, hands-on approach to enhancing teamwork.
Since establishing Total Performance Concepts in 2000, more than 700 organisations and individuals have called on Bill’s guidance.
Once again where he has walked success continues to follow.

A few examples of the broad range of topics Bill has presented:
PERFORMANCE AND MOTIVATION:
An Insight into Elite Achievement
Behind the scenes insights into the principles that developed success in such organisations as The Australian Swimming Team, The Australian Road Cycling Team, NBL Basketball championship teams, The NRL and many other elite level success stories.
Success Won’t Come To Me Unless I Go To It
With every pursuit of success there is a price to pay. Bill relates his experiences of the past twenty-five years in helping others understand, pursue and achieve success.
Success Is a Journey Not a Destination
In Bill’s experience, it usually takes many years of dedicated commitment to become an overnight success. Spend time with someone who has found the right road to take.
Lessons I’ve Learnt from Some of the World’s Greatest Achievers
For the past thirty years, Bill has been on a mission to understand, pursue and teach the principles of success. In that time he has been fortunate to work with and also learn from some of the world’s great achievers.
Goal Setting for Goal Achievement
Although goals are now part of everyday personal, sport and business life, there is vast difference between those who set goals and those that actually achieve them. Bill’s presentation outlines the key concepts to not only develop specific and relevant goals, but also how to implement them in ways to get the best out of these goals by engaging the people who pursue them.
TEAMWORK:
None of Us Are As Good As All of Us
Regardless of who you are and how well you do what you do, you will always perform better when you draw on the skills and experience of those around you.
Evolution of Team Maturity
Teams develop through various stages. Let’s have a look at where you are in the team’s evolution and why you are on the team.
Everyone Has a Role to Play
Although team roles vary, no role is more important than another. They are just different.
Teams Talk on Three Levels
But great teams only communicate on one.
Be Prepared to Play for Something Greater Than Yourself
Get what you need while delivering what everyone else wants from you.
LEADERSHIP:
The Person You Are, Not the Title You Have
To inspire people to increased levels of performance, synergy and efficiency, the leader must consistently represent a set of qualities, values and skills.
Why Would Someone Follow Your Lead
Although the need for job knowledge and management know-how are important, the leader’s individual attributes combined with the strategies, direction, support and ongoing success of the organisation are what enable the leader to effectively engage the support and commitment of the people they lead.
The Ten Key Aspects to Effective Leadership
The one thing any individual or team wants from their leader is consistency of approach. But before you can be consistent in your approach, you will need to know the areas required to drive that consistency.
Developing and Refining a Leadership Philosophy
What are the qualities that make you who you are? What are the things you are prepared to stand up for? What are you prepared to stand up against? We look at how you bring your own individual values, beliefs and philosophies together to enable you to lead effectively?
ORGANISATIONAL CULTURE:
Rules By Which We Live
What are the identified ground rules that will keep your team moving forward?
Victim of Circumstance or the Master of Your Own Destiny
Regardless of what is going on around you, ultimately it is still your choice whether you are a...
Yours, Their and Ours
Are there rules for some and not for others?
The Foundations to Effective Culture
We will get to values, behaviours and actions. But what are the three key aspects behind the success of any organisational culture?
From Systems to Flow
You can have the best policies, procedures, workflow, systems, structures, etc. But in the end, it will come down to how well you are able to focus individuals and teams on a common goal and give them a common purpose.
