What would you do when confronted with no resources, 400 colleagues who are not organised and who don’t speak English, 3000 decomposing corpses, Governments who want results yesterday, a devastated landscape and families who want answers?

Peter is an expert at creating successful results, starting from nothing - no time,

no money, no staff, but as Peter says, “No worries”. Throughout almost two decades Peter has experienced, and led people through, some of life’s most challenging events. He has come up against some of the most confronting natural disasters, accidents and acts of terrorism in recent times, making him one of Australia’s most experienced disaster management specialists.

In recent years, Peter has led both national and international teams following the Bali Bombings, the Waterfall Train Disaster and the Boxing Day Tsunami. He has firsthand experience of what it takes to achieve results in the midst of human devastation, when outcomes can only be reached through building powerful teams quickly, and how to focus on getting the job done in the face of intense environmental, political and media pressures.

Peter Baines began his working career as a Crime Scene Investigator prior to moving into a Command position within the Forensic Services Group of the NSW Police. He has completed University studies in the area of Forensic Science, Law and postgraduate studies in Management. Peter also sits on a number of National bodies and advisory groups and has received the National Medal for Service, the NSW Police Medal, and was awarded The Government of NSW Meritorious Service Award by Premier Bob Carr for his work in Thailand.

Peter, along with a UK colleague Gill Williams are Co-Founders of ‘Hands Across the Waters’. Peter and Gill are raising funds to build an orphanage in the Khao Lak region of Thailand. The orphanage will provide a home for 17 children who lost both parents as a direct result of the Tsunami, and a further 200 children who lost a parent, siblings and their homes.

Peter is a compelling speaker whose stories will make an audience laugh and cry - and realise that with an inspirational leader and purpose, anything can be achieved. He takes his audience on a journey through the experiences that has seen him witness more death and destruction than many care to imagine.
Peter demonstrates that within disaster management there are many valuable lessons for business and individuals alike. He also shares his many heart-wrenching stories of dealing with families, meeting Prime Ministers, and will provide you with a measure for clarity of purpose like no other you have heard before! You will be moved and inspired, and will leave you knowing that you can achieve a whole lot more with a whole lot less.

Peter is a Detective Inspector of Operations within the Forensic Services Group of the NSW Police Force, and offers a rare insight into what it takes to lead powerfully, with integrity and compassion, in the most extraordinary of circumstances.

Topics Include:
¨       How to be a leader with no positional authority;
¨       How to handle politics and still get the job done;
¨       How to communicate when no one speaks the same language;
