An ex-East Ballarat potato farmer and a tough and uncompromising full-back, he went to the Saints as a forward but was in defence after a couple of games.
He won a place in the Victorian team in 1987 and was an All-Australian player the following year. He was appointed St Kilda's captain in 1987 and proved to be a fine skipper leading the club into the finals for the first time in 18 years in 1991. He won St Kilda's best and fairest in 1988 and represented Victoria 11 times. He was St Kilda's longest serving captain and was regarded as one of the game's finest leaders. He led the Saints in 177 games.
