Australia has another national sports hero with a remarkable history. In a league of his own, Olympic speed skating short track gold medallist Steven Bradbury has a story to tell that is both amazing and inspiring.
Olympic glory
Steven Bradbury's moment of Olympic glory came at the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City. In one of the most bizarre Olympic finals of all time, the 28 year old Bradbury was trailing along well out of the race in last place when all of a sudden destiny struck.
Men's 1000m Speed Skating Final
In the last moments of the men's 1000m Speed Skating Final, Steven Bradbury's four more fancied opponents spectacularly crashed in front of him, including red-hot favourite Apolo Anton Ohno of the United States. The self-destruction was complete in a tangle of arms, legs and flashing ice blades.
Steve Bradbury nonchalantly coasted past the debris and glided over the finish line his arms raised to the heavens in amazement.
Australia's first ever Winter Olympics Gold
Australia's first ever gold medal in the Winter Olympics belonged to Steven Bradbury. His amazing finish immediately entered Aussie folklore. The phrase, “He’s done a Bradbury”, became an instant catchcry to recognise those who triumph over seemingly impossible odds.
