For a former gymnast, flying through the air performing tucks, twists, flips and somersaults is the relatively simple aspect of aerial freestyle skiing. It was the assignment of learning how to ski at age 19, which proved a more daunting challenge for Alisa Camplin.
Alisa was introduced to the sport of freestyle aerial skiing, after being discovered by a Team Buller representative whilst performing trampoline acrobatics at a Ski Expo in 1994. Having set foot on snow but a few times in her life, the concept of pursuing a career in winter sport initially seemed to be a crazy proposition.
Testament to her strength of character and sheer determination, within 6 years Alisa not only mastered the art of skiing; moreover she was standing upon the World Cup podium. This despite numerous falls and crashes with trees and anything or anyone in her way. Alisa continued through broken limbs, soft tissue injuries and several serious concussion including one of six days.
Subsequently Alisa has catapulted through the National and World rankings. Her fitness, strength and discipline finding reward in the spectacular sport of aerial skiing. Ranked second in Australia behind World Cup Champion Jacqui Cooper and fifth internationally, Alisa was viewed as a potential medal contender for the 2002 Winter Olympic Games.
Season 2000/01 saw Alisa introduce one of her two Olympic Jumps, with a degree of difficulty reserved only for the most talented and courageous of female aerialists. Her jump, a triple twisting double somersault is matched by a second jump of the same difficultly.
In 2002 the journey was rewarded – Gold Medallist Salt Lake 2002, Freestyle Aerial Skiing.
