Triple World Champion in the 1000 metre Time Trial, Shane Kelly's biggest triumph came in 1995 when he claimed his first World Championship and a new World Record of 1.00.613s, earning him the nickname "Minute Man".
In Atlanta, while striving to add Olympic gold to his achievements, all Australians felt Shane's pain when his foot slipped off the pedal at the start, shattering his dream. The eventual winner's time was nearly two full seconds outside Shane's World Record.
However, Shane proved himself a true champion by regrouping to successfully defend his World Championship title shortly after Atlanta.
At Sydney 2000 Shane Kelly once again carried the hopes of a nation on his shoulders in the 1km time trial at the Olympic velodrome.
