Neil Kerley is known as the “king” of football in South Australia, a title built over his five decades of involvement in Australian Rules football at the highest level.
Fiercely parochial, his deeds both on and off the field against the Big V (the Victorian Football Team) have endeared him to the South Australian public.
After a successful country football career Neil joined “City” football with West Adelaide in 1955. He was captain from 1959, then captain/coach from 1961 including a premiership. Football politics saw Neil Kerley leave for South Adelaide in 1964 and another flag - the Panthers’ first in 26 years.
A transfer to Glenelg Football Club in 1967, retirement as a player in 1969 but continuing as coach for the clubs second flag ever in 1973. In 1983 Neil Kerley returned to West Adelaide and achieved yet another flag.
Among all this, “Knuckles” captained the state team and was part of he 1963 team which defeated Victoria at the MCG - a feat not to be repeated until 1993.
Neil Kerley was coach of the victorious Australian team on the 1987 tour of Ireland and was the Adelaide Crows football manager in their first season.
Neil Kerley was inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame in 1997.
Neil Kerley now works for the Seven Television Network as a reporter, Football Commentator and Panel Member of FootyPlus and Sportsworld Footy Panel. He is also a regular on Australia’s Top Rating Sports Radio Program on Adelaide’s Radio 5AA
