Being involved at Adelaide Oval for 35 successive seasons, having started there as an 18 year old in 1969, Les Burdett manages 15 hectares of turf and buildings at Adelaide Oval and other areas, which include:- 5 cricket pitch squares and ovals, 2 bowling greens (14 rinks), 65 practice cricket pitches and 6 grass tennis courts.
Les was the South Australian Cricket Association’s representative for monitoring the construction of the $10 million Sir Donald Bradman Stand in 1989 and 1990 and the Chappell and Clem Hill Stands redevelopment in 2002.
Les has spoken at numerous conferences in Australia and overseas on topics such as National and International Cricket Pitch Preparation and Maintenance. Les has also published several books and received numerous awards.
Adelaide Oval is one of the most beautiful and picturesque cricket grounds in the world and is home to the West End Redbacks - South Australia's cricket team. Two new stands were completed in August 2003 on the eastern side, and the ground has a capacity for football of about 34,000, and for cricket about 32,000. The Adelaide Oval is host to not only these sports, but also rugby league, rugby union and concerts.
