James started in media by successfully combing his 10-year first class professional cricket career with his growing sports journalist career. James is unique in that he is an accomplished host and commentator of both First class cricket and AFL. James has become one of the hardest working people in the media, appearing weekdays on Breakfast radio and calling AFL and cricket for radio and TV.

A career highlight was hosting the 2001 Ashes series from England for the Seven Network. 2004 saw James increasing his sports role for the National Nine Network ( cricket and AFL ), being heard on Breakfast radio with Triple M's ‘The Cage' in Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide as well as hosting ‘M-sport' with Sam Newman and heading up the Friday night and Saturday afternoon AFL coverage for 3MMM. In 2006 in addition to other media commitments James was given the role of co-host of the AFL Footy Show on the Nine Network.
