In 1987 Australian Michael Groom lost a third of both feet to frostbite while climbing one of the world's highest mountains. He was told to forget about an active outdoor life but by 1990 he had not only taught himself to walk again, he was back climbing in the Himalayas. In 1999 Michael Groom achieved his goal of climbing the world's five highest mountains. During many cold, lonely, pain- racked nights, he was tempted to give up, One thing got him through: sheer will.
Michael Groom's achievements would be remarkable enough for anybody. But he set himself the astounding extra challenge of doing it all without using bottled oxygen. Michael Groom has been close to tragedy many times, including the disastrous 1996 Everest attempt in which many climbers died. Michael was a guide on Rob Hall's Everest team, and of the six team-mates who reached the summit, only he and, Into Thin Air author Jon Krakauer, survived. Only sheer will got him through.
In 1997 Michael Groom's autobiography Sheer Will was released and again in 1999 and 2000.
A documentary was made from the book and screened nationally by the Seven Network in April 2000
