Jason McCartney was the hero and face of the Bali Bombings, and a person who epitomises the Australian Fighting Spirit. Despite suffering horrific injuries from the bombings, Jason risked his own life to rescue two sisters from the terrorist bombing, and then give up his seat on the plane as he believed there were people who were far worse off than him. On his return home he was almost unidentifiable by his parents and soon after, spent a week in a coma with the last rites being administered to him.
However, his amazing determination to survive and win the battle saw him make it to his wedding on time, once again play football, and then his ultimate goal of playing for North Melbourne and his 88 mates (those Australians killed in the bombing) on the evening of June 6th, 2003. The 3 point fairytale victory over Richmond was one of the most emotional events ever experienced by Australians in this country.
Jason McCartney's return and ultimate glory was a victory over terrorism and a “win for all those who survived Bali.”
