Take two passionate gardening friends who met on the hockey field and share a love of red wine and a severe dislike of Cocos palms, with wicked and distinctive laughs and place them in front of a microphone on a Saturday morning and hold on to your hats you’re listening to The Soil Sisters an hilarious hour of advice about gardening, men, children with a bit of cooking and cleaning and even a few motivational tips thrown in for good measure.
Sabrina and Andrea combine their talents each Saturday morning between 9am and 10am on 720 ABC Perth. They are regulars at Garden Week, Gardening Australia Live and Kings Park Festival.
Sabrina Hahn
Sabrina started her gardening career completing a certificate of horticulture at Bentley TAFE a hundred years ago, then a Degree in Applied Science Horticulture at WAIT, and finally completed a Bachelor of Social Science (Leisure Sciences) at Edith Cowan University. Then a landscaping business in Perth (Gumnut Landscapes), followed by a move to Kalgoorlie where she managed a nursery.
Sabrina is a member of the Horticulture Media Association
Sabrina has also done volunteer work for CALM looking for rare and endangered species, is passionate about the environment, frogs and gardening organically.
She lists one of her many qualifications as having a black belt in kickboxing.
Sabrina grew up in the wilds of New Guinea and draws her gardening inspiration from her grandmother. She has a garden design and consultation service and operates all over Western Australia.
Sabrina has three grown up children who just won’t completely leave home
She has just returned from a trip to Borneo where she climbed Mt Kintakinabaloo in a pair Blundies, shorts and a t-shirt…but that’s another story.
Sabrina has just published her first book with a second due out in 2008.
She writes a regular column in ‘The West Australian’ in is a feature writer for many gardening magazines.
Sabrina will be undertaking a bit of overseas travel this year as she enters the world of Garden Tour guide.
Andrea Whitely
Andrea is the West Australian Co-ordinator of Australia’s Open Garden Scheme. She has had an association with the Open Garden Scheme since 2000 and was a Board Member and Chairman of the Regional Committee from 2003-2006.
Andrea is the West Australian training consultant for Yates, a division of Orica and trains Bunnings and Home Hardware staff in the basic principles of gardening.
Andrea has written for various gardening magazines including ‘Your Garden’, ‘The Garden Guru’ and ‘The West Australian Gardener’.
A self confessed corporate junkie, upon completing her degree in Geography and Politics from Monash University, Andrea has held management positions at Myer, Big W, a short stint as a yacht charter broker, Myer again and then Ansett and while these positions provided an endless source of fun, gardening for pleasure has always been her true passion in life. This she attributes to her childhood, growing up in Victoria, The Garden State, going to school across the road from the Botanical Gardens and spending holidays in the country with her great-aunt and her incredible vegie garden.
Andrea is a member of the Horticulture Media Association
Andrea also provides gardening advice for private clients.
Andrea is married with three children (too young to leave home) and lives in Floreat, Western Australia.
