Elaine Canty is a pioneer in the media, sport and the law.
She was the first female sports broadcaster on ABC Radio and Television in Victoria and is the first and only woman to be appointed to the AFL Tribunal (1996 – 2005).
She was also the first woman to anchor the national Olympic Games coverage for ABC Radio (Barcelona 1992).
She is Chairman of the Royal Botanic Gardens, and currently sits on the Boards of Vic Health, the Royal Women’s Hospital, Queen Victoria Market, Melbourne Wholesale Fish Market and the State Sport Centres Trust.
Elaine is a former director of Athletics Australia (1998 – 2003), Women’s and Children’s Health, (1999 – 2004), M2002 World Masters Games and a foundation director (1989 - 2000) of the Victorian Institute of Sport.
In addition to her Board duties Elaine runs a corporate presentations consultancy, Canty Communications Pty Ltd and is a regular guest and presenter on ABC radio and television.
For 8 years she presented a daily current affairs and lifestyle talkback program on 774 ABC Melbourne. She has covered four Olympic Games, and produced and presented an international award winning sports documentary series.
Before Elaine Canty joined ABC she worked as a solicitor, as a tutor in Clinical Legal Education at Monash University Elain has worked overseas as a senior Mathematics teacher in London and a soda-fountain girl for the United States Army in Berlin.
As a broadcaster and Elain has covered three Olympic Games and in Barcelona was the main studio presenter for the ABC national radio coverage of the Olympics.
