Dr Clio Cresswell has established a diverse career as mathematician, author, writer and presenter and has adapted the field of mathematics to a variety of topics and business models. Using elements of entertainment and insight, she is particularly effective in demonstrating the power of mathematics to create better outcomes... whether for the individual, the business or the institution.
Her professional speaking mission is to entertain through intellectual stimulation and to ensure that audience members must leave laughing... and thinking.
Clio entertains audiences as diverse as she is and has spoken to clients big and small around the world, including the Insurance Council of Australia in Australia & AMP in New Zealand, Buffalo State College in Buffalo, USA, and California State University Northridge in Los Angeles, USA.
Clio is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Mathematics and Statistics at The University of Sydney and author of Mathematics and Sex in which she discusses the various models of human sexual relationships; she also writes a "relationships advice" Q&A column for New Woman Magazine; and features regularly on television, radio and press.
Diversity has been a constant theme in Clio’s life. Born in England, she spent part of her childhood on a Greek island, and was then schooled in the south of France where she was studying Visual Art. At eighteen she simultaneously discovered the joys of Australia and mathematics. Clio studied mathematics at The University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia, and, following a stint as an actuary, returned to university to win the University Medal and complete a Ph.D.
Clio has interviewed such personalities as Dennis Rodman on the top rating Australian TV chat show The Panel; delivered serious book reviews for the reputable Science Show on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation's Radio National; and has been a not-so-serious host on breakfast radio for one of Australia’s leading commercial stations, Triple M. Clio has also given relationship advice on one of Australia’s longest-running TV programs, Beauty and The Beast, and, among other pursuits, launched one of the latest bras from the Triumph International collection. In 2001, Clio was not only selected as one of 200 Australia Day Ambassadors to promote Australian excellence every year during the Australia Day celebrations, but was also voted one of the 25 Most Beautiful People by Who Weekly (The Australian incarnation of People Magazine).
Clio’s outlook on life is entertaining and informative. Her continual research into unconventional topic areas and connecting themes between all subjects inspires audiences to think about what they do in a fresh, productive and exciting new way.
