Mark Butler’s comedy career began in Manchester in 1998, and within a year he had been whisked off to London to perform on the world’s most established stand-up comedy circuit. He quickly made a name for himself, punching well above his weight, winning the television stand-up comedy competition ‘Take the Mic’ on the ITV network. Soon he was featuring as a headline act at the top comedy clubs all around the UK and he was a regular performer on Sky TV’s ‘Rum’ programme. He embarked on a national tour in 2001 but a year later he decided to put down the mic and pick up the pen.
In 2002 he moved to Japan to start work on his long-awaited novel. He spent a total of eighteen months in Tokyo becoming well-versed in the Japanese language and culture. During that time he ran comedy workshops for Japanese wannabe comedians and wrote travel articles for London’s major newspapers. He spent a number of months travelling around Japan wearing a horse’s head, documenting his experiences of being seen but not seen, and these tales were picked up and published in hardback by Lonely Planet Books.
In 2004 he made his comedy debut in Australia at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival with his one-man monologue ‘Planes, Trains and a Horse’s Head’. He quickly discovered that Melbourne was one of the world’s most liveable cities, and that London was one of the world’s most over-crowded, grey-clouded shitholes, and so he started spending more and more time Down Under. Mark Butler for the past few years he has been dividing his time between the UK and Australia.
Since then he has built up a reputation in Australia as a hard-working, versatile and thoroughly professional stand-up comedian. He is a regular performer on both the club circuit and the corporate circuit, and each year he takes a brand new show to the Melbourne International Comedy Festival and the Adelaide Fringe Festival.
Mark has also made a name for himself Down Under as a writer. He regularly contributes articles to The Age and the Sydney Morning Herald, and 2007 saw the launch of his novel on Australian shores.
Entertaining Australian corporate audiences Mark looks at our culture from the outside and tells us what he sees.
On subjects such as politics, travel, technology, and body language Mark has an opinion to share and a multitude of jokes to deliver. But no two of his shows are ever the same; a prolific writer of material, he produces tailor-made comedy performances for each of his clients. Whether he is asked to speak at conservative corporate breakfasts or at rowdy Christmas parties he takes his comedy very seriously and writes a show to suit the needs of that client.
Mark does not tell jokes about toilets or drugs. Instead, he connects with his audience through his witty observations on the Australian way of life. With a background in teaching and a clear spoken voice Mark is able to express himself clearly without the need for bad language. Well-read and well-travelled, Mark Butler’s intelligent brand of humour has made him extremely sought after on the corporate circuits in both Australia and the UK.
Clean but edgy, sharp but irreverent, Mark puts his audience before his ego and gives a dynamic performance that is guaranteed to bring the house down.
