Ross Wilson, a potted history: Ross has come a long way since 1964 when he fronted The Pink Finks, a schoolboy playing R&B standards. Ross had the nous to record Louie Louie; possibly Australia’s first independent single, which charted and got the band a record deal while he was still at school. In 1966 he formed “The Party Machine” and honed his songwriting skills, culminating in a song book which was published but deemed obscene and confiscated by the Vice Squad. Returning to Australia in 1970 he formed Sons of the Vegetal Mother which ultimately evolved into Daddy Cool and in 1971 released Australia’s Rock Anthem; Eagle Rock. By the end of the year, the band had set new sales records in Australia, and became the first Australian band to make a real impact on the American touring circuit. He produced Skyhooks in 1974 and again set new sales records in this country. Simultaneously he founded an era of equity in music publishing; his first signing being Greg Macainsh. 1976 saw the masterminding of Australia’s first Rock movie “OZ” which featured “Living in the land of OZ”, Ross first solos recording; a song about aboriginal land rights. Mondo Rock was formed and the Chemistry album became the largest selling album in 1980 with songs including State of the Heart and Cool World. Mondo Rock continued to record hits through the eighties (Come Said the Boy, Primitive Love Rites, No Time) until Ross decided to purse a solo career; Bed of Nails being the first single from his highly acclaimed “Dark Side of the Man” album.
People come to see him, not because of his last record but because he always delivers: he exudes honestly and integrity.
Recently Ross has written songs with Jimmy Barnes, John Farnham, Paul Kelly, Rick Brewster and Don Walker. If you don’t know how good Ross Wilson is…find out.
