Nina began her professional singing career at the age of 16 and since the tender age of 8 performed in numerous musicals, choirs and elite vocal ensembles during her primary and high school years. Throughout those years Nina received classical voice training from a number of respected and well-known music teachers. Nina also studied music at the Victorian College of the Arts with the Improvisation Department.
Since 1994, Nina has toured extensively both within Australia and overseas, having performed at the South Pacific Jazz Festival in Vanuatu, Sacramento Jazz Jubilee in the USA, Germany, Holland, Belgium, Denmark, and the Kobe Jazz Festival in Japan.
Her popularity in the Melbourne Jazz scene continues to grow steadily and she is frequently featured with bands including Mistaken Identity, Swingin’ Sidewalks and Hotter Than Six. She has also worked extensively with greats including Don Burrows, Bob Sedergreen and Bob Barnard.
In 1994 Nina was voted by her peers as the recipient of the Montsalvat Yalumba Jazz Medal, a prestigious and coveted award for the most up and coming jazz talent under 25 years of age.
Nina has also featured in a number of newspaper and magazines both in Australia and overseas and in 1995 was nominated as one of Australia’s 50 most eligible women in the November issue of Metropolitan style magazine. She has also appeared on the Midday Show with Kerri-Anne Kennerly, featured in an episode of Channel 9’s Getaway program and has performed on Good Morning Australia with Bert Newton, as well as having appeared on various television programs in the USA and Japan.
Nina has recorded 10 CD’s with other bands and artists and has released two of her own albums entitled “Just You, Just Me” and her most recent release “Out of the Blue”. Both recordings are now being played daily on easy listening Radio.
Today Nina has focuses on delivering her brand of music with her own quartet simply named “The Nina Ferro Quartet”
In an industry where jazz is seen to be a music enjoyed by a select minority, Nina has been able to touch many people, of varying age groups, with the intensity that makes one realise this style of music is still exhilarating, very much alive and enjoyed around the world.
Her aim is to provide her audience with a fresh, bold, high-energy expression of mainstream jazz embracing a variety of different styles including, swing, Latin, Soul and Rhythm & Blues.
Nina is inspired by the greats, such as Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Peggy Lee, Frank Sinatra, Aretha Franklin and many other masters of this medium. Her aim is that she too, through her passionate, innovative and broad understanding of the music and its place in the industry, can make a meaningful contribution to the world of Jazz.”
